Tokyo – 13th – 14th Jan 2010

Yesterday the weather improved so we went to the Imperial Palace. You can’t visit the palace itself, but the grounds are very pleasant – they used to form the grounds of Edo castle, the biggest fortification in the world, and home of the Shoguns - but it’s been destroyed over the years, with only a park remaining.

Today we visited the Asakusa district, home of several temples and the five-storey pagoda. On entering the main pagoda we followed the locals in ‘bathing’ ourselves in smoke from an incense burner. Apparently this will cure all of our ailments!

After mooching around for a few hours we transferred to the airport for our flight to New York. Weirdly we had to cross the International Date Line, which meant we actually traveled back in time. Our fight took off at 7.20pm on Thursday and 12 hours later we landed in New York at 5.20pm on Thursday. It makes your head hurt if you think about it too long!
