Ko Phi Phi, Thailand: 26th – 30th Dec 09
We’ve spent the last few days recovering from Christmas. Sharazed left on Sunday, she’s off to party on Ko Phangan and then to meet her bro on Ko Tao. Before she left she convinced us that we should do some scuba diving, as it’s one of her top hobbies. So on Thursday we did the first stage of our PADI (professional diving certificate). We decided not to go for the full 3 day course, which would have been an ‘open water’ certificate, but we did do 2 days, which means we are qualified to dive to 12 metres anywhere in the world.
The course consisted of 2 escorted dives, on which Pabs, Matt and I were joined by a French chap and our diving instructor. As well as swimming around looking at the fishies, we had to do several exercises such as exchanging regulators (air supplies) from each other and taking off our masks - not particularly pleasant experiences as you end up with water up your nose. We all enjoyed the overall experience though and saw loads of fish, a turtle and a reef shark!
We also had to prove that we could swim well, so had to jump off the top of the dive boat and swim round it three times and then tread water for 10 minutes. I’m normally not very comfortable swimming if I can’t touch the floor, but this was fine and has made me much more comfortable in the sea.
So Matt and I are both now qualified scuba divers, we next plan to use our newly acquired sub-aquatic skills in the Galapagos, which is apparently the ‘holy grail’ for any scuba enthusiast. Yay!
