New York, USA: 16th – 17th January 2010

Yesterday we completely bombed out – having hangovers, jet lag and a lack of sleep, we did very little except venture out for lunch and sleep. Luckily our hotel is right in the heart of the action – 3 minutes’ walk to Times Square in one direction, and 3 minutes to central park in the other. It’s surrounded by great diners and delis so it’s easy to find a bite to eat without venturing too far!

For lunch we went to the famous ‘Stage Deli’, where performers from Carnegie Hall, across the road, often come to eat. We were recommended to have the ‘Rudy Giuliani’ sandwich, which was about 7 inches high, full of pastrami and corned beef, very nice but just WAY too big! These New Yorkers are really not good at portion control!

Today we rose early and went for breakfast followed by a walk around Central Park. At lunchtime we took the ferry across the Hudson River for 3 minutes to Hoboken, where Kathleen lives with her cute Yorkshire terrier Lulu.

We started partying early, resulting in a full-on living room disco by 6pm – fuelled by wine, beer and Very strong home-made margaritas! We were joined by a couple of Kathleen’s friends whom we’d met on Friday, plus Dennis, whom we hadn’t met before.

At about 9.30 we headed to the local bar and danced to the Spice Girls, before heading back home…at least that was the plan, but Dennis caught up with us at the train station and ended up taking us to several bars back in Manhattan’s West Village, including the famous Stonewall bar, where the Gay Rights movement started in the 60s – all very good fun!
