Quito, Ecuador: 23rd January 2010
We spent today visiting various ‘view points’ around the city. We started with El Panecillo, a hill that dominates the town, with a huge statue of an angel on top, called The Virgin of Quito. The views were spectacular.
After that we climbed to the top of the basilica, which involved hundreds of stairs and some very precarious ladders!
In the evening we went to Café Mosaico, which has a terrace overlooking the city – this had the best view as we weren’t too high up, so could still see the detail of the buildings, but we could literally see for miles.
Whilst there the clouds started rolling in, and there was a thunder storm, which was very dramatic - especially when a flash of lightning hit the building next to us, literally 5 metres away, accompanied by the loudest bang we’ve ever heard – everyone on the restaurant terrace jumped for cover, and I think I managed a small scream along with half the other diners!
Tomorrow we’re going to visit the equator, and then on Monday we go on a cruise around the Galapagos Islands for the week – we won’t have internet, so I’ll update the blog when we return.
