Quito, Ecuador: 21st – 22nd January 2010

Yesterday we flew to Quito, via Miami. The flight was great, with clear skies, so we could see the whole coastline of America as we flew by.

Quito is breathtaking – one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. It’s 2,600 metres up and nestled amongst mountains. The old town is totally stunning with tonnes of original 16th century buildings which have been tastefully restored. On every corner there’s a church - and they’re all full of fabulous golden carvings and statues.

We spent today walking around, visiting several churches and sitting in the Plaza Grande, the main square, which is great for people watching.

We’re staying in a very cute yet elegant hotel near the new town, with some really buzzy bars and restaurants around the corner, which blast out our favourite pop and dance hits – so we have the best of both worlds!

The weather here is perfect – 25 degrees, and no humidity, so just like a good English summer’s day. This is our first time in South America (we’ve previously been to Mexico and Cuba, but they’re much further North) and our first impressions are great – the people seem very friendly and the food is nice – and cheap too, which is great after being in expensive cities such as Tokyo and New York.

We’ll be spending 10 weeks in South America, travelling through Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Chile and Brazil. Yay!
