Singapore – 7th - 8th Jan 2010
Yesterday we flew from Phuket to Singapore. About 5 minutes into the flight there was a massive flash of light and a huge bang. Everyone jumped out their skins and Paul squealed like a girl, scary for a few seconds. Luckily the plane carried on flying – no engine damage as some people feared. It transpired that the plane had been hit by lightning, a fairly rare and pretty scary event! We later read in the in-flight magazine that planes are designed to absorb lightning strikes, phew (some people’s knickers will have to be thrown out though).
We spent today wandering around Singapore and I have to say we’re both impressed. We’d heard that the city was clinical and sterile but this isn’t the case at all. Yes, there are lots of modern buildings and gleaming shopping malls, but there is also a lot of history and character.
Our favourite places were Little India and the Muslim Quarter. They are adjacent to each other and consisted of street after street of beautiful, if scruffy, colonial buildings full of cafes, sari shops, tailors, restaurants and markets selling all manner of goods. The streets were buzzing with people and very atmospheric.
We also visited Sentosa Island, which has a theme park and went up the observation tower, took the Sky Ride and went down the Luge, a sort of down-hill slalom in go-carts. All very good fun!
Singapore has an enormous variety of restaurants; you can literally get any type of cuisine from just about every continent in the world. We even saw an Irish-Italian restaurant serving German food called O’Geronimos, fusion gone mad!
