Santiago, Chile: 7th - 9th March 10
At the weekend we said our goodbyes to Tania who is staying in Bolivia for another couple of weeks before heading home - and we flew from La Paz to Santiago, the capital of Chile. The area was hit by a huge earthquake 8 days ago but we haven’t seen much damage – we have felt the odd aftershock though!
The city is a huge contrast to La Paz – much more modern and clean. Chile is the richest country in South America, and you can really tell – for a start people actually finish buildings here!
We spent Monday and Tuesday exploring the city. We visited various plazas and the cathedral, which was magnificent. We also popped into the Pre-Columbian museum which displays artifacts from all over central and South America - very interesting.
On Tuesday evening we went to Santiago’s top restaurant ‘Astrid y Gaston’ which is run by Peru’s most famous chef. We had the tasting menu of 11 courses (all very small) which was beautiful!
Afterwards we went for some drinks where we were joined by a local chap called Enzo. He was in love with our barmaid Cecila. So we taught him the Neil Diamond song “Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart”! Something got lost in translation as next time she came over he grabbed her and sang “Cecilia, you’re breaking my house”. Cecilia looked puzzled and Matt and I laughed (a lot)!
