El Calafate, Argentina: 21st – 22nd March 10
Today we went for an 8 mile hike on the Pereto Moreno Glacier.
We started off by taking the bus to the view points – a set of balconies on an opposite hill where you get a panoramic view of the North and South faces of the Glacier. We saw some amazing ice falls, very cool!
We then walked through a beautiful forest at the glacier’s edge, passing waterfalls on the way.
The entire Glacier is apparently the size of Buenos Aires, but we didn’t walk the entire length – phew!
We had to wear ‘crampons’ - like knives strapped to your shoes so they can grip onto the ice, and we hiked for 4 hours in a circular route to the center of the glacier and back.
We saw loads of unusual sights, big crevasses and ‘sink holes’ which were so vibrantly blue – amazing!
We walked in a glacier in Iceland last year, which was very different as it had huge ice caves and amazing sculptural formations - the big difference with this one was the sheer face into the lake – the Iceland glacier disappeared gradually onto the coast, so the Iceland glacier won hands down for amazing ice formation, but this one won for sheer drama!
On the boat on the way back we were treated to a couple of glasses of whiskey with glacier ice- super trooper!
