Mendoza, Argentina: 12th – 13th March 10

Yesterday we travelled 8 hours by bus from Valparaiso in Chile to Mendoza in Argentina. The journey involved crossing the Andes which was very dramatic, with windy roads and steep cliffs all around.

Mendoza is a beautiful green city, which is surprising as technically it’s in a desert. They’ve built dams to catch the snow-melt from the top of the Andes which they channel through the town to keep the trees lush!

The city was destroyed in an earthquake in 1882, and re-built along European lines with long tree-lined boulevards and many public squares. Each square has statues and fountains, and the main central square is beautiful, more like a park really. There are loads of pavement cafes everywhere so it feels more like being in Paris than South America.

We spent today wandering around the squares and boulevards and had an early night - we have a big day tomorrow, a full day wine tour around the local vineyards – Yay!
