Rurranabaque, Bolivia: 23nd Feb 10

Today we flew from La Paz to the small town of Rurranabaque on the edge of the jungle. Getting to the airport was a fairly stressful affair as there had been rains in Rurranabaque so the flight was delayed – the airfield there is covered in grass, so the slightest rains can delay flights – with it being on the edge of the rain forest this isn’t too practical!

We finally had a call at our hotel at 10.30 telling us to leave immediately as our flight was leaving at 11am – eh? Needless to say we weren’t too impressed and used the word ‘bugger’ a lot. Luckily the airport was only 20 minutes drive, and the flight eventually only left at 12 noon, with us safely on board. Phew!

The plane was a tiny 20-seat jobby, which you couldn’t stand up in. We flew over the mountains which looked amazing, and made us both think about that film ‘Alive’ where a very similar plane crashed in very similar mountains and people end up eating each other. Luckily that didn’t happen to us! The landing was fine although we did a small skid on the grass which made everyone a tad terrified!

Rurranabaque was a nice surprise, much more rural than we’d imagined. It looked, smelt and felt very similar to many Asian villages we’d been to, and made us realize how much we’d loved Asia. Tomorrow we head for the jungle!
