Spitzkoppe: 30th Aug 09
We left early in the morning to drive through the desert to Spitzkoppe. On the way we stopped in a nearby town to go to the supermarket – bizarrely, at the side of the road was a group of young ladies wearing traditional dress and covered in mud – with their bazookers out! It was really odd – a modern town with this traditional sight – and then actually in the supermarket one of them was shopping! I’ve never seen that type of bap in a supermarket before!
Spitzkoppe is an extraordinary place – a group of red mountains looming out of the flat desert – very similar to Australia’s Ayres rock in colour and form. We approached them through the desert and once the afternoon heat had cooled a bit we went for a guided walk to look at the nearby rock paintings which are 4,000 years old – then climbed one of the hills to watch a spectacular sunset.
Right next to our campsite (which had no showers, toilets or running water) was a brilliant cave where we lit a fire and got mullered. Moses, our tour guide got his ipod out and we listened to Kylie for hours . Yes - me in Africa, in a cave with a fire listening to early Kylie hits – heaven! Unfortunately Matt’s developed a cold so turned in early and missed the shenanigans but felt much better the following morning, unlike me who had a minging hangover. I went to bed around 1am, leaving some of the group to sleep overnight in the cave.
