Etosha: 28th Aug 09

Reached Etosha, which is Namibia’s main tourist attraction and one of the best game parks in the world. Having been spoilt in the Serengeti we weren’t holding out too much hope of seeing anything amazing but we were proved wrong!

In the afternoon we did a game drive in our truck which was weird – not as good as the jeeps we’d used before, but we saw some elephants. The best thing about Etosha is that it’s peppered with man-made waterholes where all of the animals gather, so you can almost always find them easily. Also, the three campsites within the park all have water holes attached which are floodlit at night – so you can stay up all night watching for the animals.

This first evening we went to the watering hole after sunset and waited. After about an hour a Black Rhino appeared! It was amazing – the Black Rhino is one of the most rare and endangered animals in the world and it came out of the shadows and started drinking just 15 metres from us – we were really chuffed as this meant we’d now seen the whole of the ‘big 5’ animals (Lions, Elephants, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino).
