Cape Town: 8th September 09

Ugg – this morning was a freaking nightmare – we had to rise at 4.30 to start the long drive to Cape Town and it was absolutely freezing – we all had to get into our sleeping bags on the truck.

We by-passed Cape Town to go to the Cape of Good Hope and by the time we got there the weather had brightened up and it was warm again – phew! The Cape of Good Hope is the most South Westerly point of Africa, and is known as the meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Like good tourists we had our photos taken at the sign then headed into Cape Town itself. This was officially the end of our African truck adventure. 6 ½ weeks, 7 countries, 6,000 miles and lots of amazing experiences. It was quite sad really...for a couple of minutes!

Matt and I jumped into a taxi to our hotel – Derwent House boutique hotel. It’s AMAZING!!!!!!!!! My God, we have a massive bath, massive bed, massive balcony with views down to the harbour and over to Table Mountain, free wireless in the room, DVD player and TV – such luxury after slumming it for 6 ½ weeks! There’s also an ‘honesty’ bar downstairs – i.e. take what you want and mark it up on the tally sheet – as well as free tea and coffee...and cake! Loads of cake! CAKAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKE!

After bathing, drinking, smoking and caking we set off to say goodbye to the rest of the tour group at a cool restaurant called Mama Africa. I had mixed grill of Crocodile, Ostrich, Kudu and Springbok. Yum. Matt had chicken livers followed by chicken curry. After the meal we went to an Irish bar with a live band, gave our tour guide Moses, driver Timan and cook, Sir Henry of Sausage their tips and said goodbye to everyone.
