Fish River Canyon: 5th September 09

This morning we drove for a couple of hours to the Giant’s playground - this is an area with loads of rocks randomly piled on top of each other, looking like a giant’s play area. Apparently if you look from above, the gaps in between the rocks look like Giants footprints! We walked around for half an hour then went to the Quiver Tree Forest.

Quiver trees are unique to Namibia, they grow very slowly and can reach up to 300 years old. They’re protected in law so you can get a year in prison for cutting one down. They get their name because they have hollow branches and the San people used to use the branches as quivers to hold their arrows for hunting.

In the afternoon we drove to our next campsite a few Kilometres from the Fish River Canyon, then went to the canyon itself to watch the sunset. The canyon is spectacular – it’s the second biggest in the world after the Grand Canyon in Colorado. We drank wine and had cheese and crackers as the sun went down.

Only 3 days to go to the end of the trip (in South Africa), and then we’ll be back on Namibia for our Cheetah conservation project before heading to Asia!
