Mto Wa Mbu (Mosquito Creek) to Karatu: 28th July 09

Wow – great day today. Woke up in our tents after a good night’s sleep and after breakfast we went to the local township – we had 4 local guides who were all in their 20s. Went around the banana plantations, a carpenters, a school and a market. Unlike some of these tours we didn’t feel like tourists – more like guests. Everyone was so friendly and we had kids following us round and playing with us all the way. At the carpenters we met one of the guide’s sons called Cohen, mega cute! And at the school I’ve never seen so many smiley faces – absolute bliss – they treated us like superstars (I felt like Princess Di!). One of the girls thought it was hilarious to pinch Matt’s shades, try them on and show off to all her friends, whilst some of the other kids stroked his hair (or lack of it with his new grade 1 cut!).

The women around here all wear beautiful clothes and some of them were stunning. At the campsite in Karatu in the evening a group of local youths came and danced for us. The unemployment here is very high – about 60% so they took the initiative to form a dance troupe and tour round the campsites – they were excellent although some of the dancing was a tad rude! Lots of naughty actions! Matt and I got into the spirit and danced with them at the end – I think Matt got carried away – look at what he’s doing in the photo! We’re both loving Tanzania – it’s like paradise, although I know it’s very poor, the unemployment rate is around 40% for the country as a whole. We’re here in Tanzania for another 9 days and travel to the Serengeti for a 3 day safari tomorrow, balloon trip on Thursday and Zanzibar next week! :o)
