Back to Dar Es Salaam: 8.8.09
Drove back to Stone Town and spent an hour and a half looking round again – like the feel of the place, it’s a bit scruffy but you can see the potential and it’s nice that there are beach-side bars in the middle of town. Got on the ferry and ominously the captain started handing out sick bags – he insisted everyone had one. Although there was no wind in the dock, the sea was VERY choppy in the strait between Zanzibar and the mainland – apparently it’s the deepest part of the Indian Ocean so often gets chopped up. Luckily Matt and I got a seat on deck. The wind blew spray in our faces and the boat lurched from side to side – it was a tad scary at times but we survived OK and strangely lots of people went to sleep on the floor. Downstairs, where most of our group were was a different thing altogether – a complete vom fest. It STANK when we had to walk through to get off the ferry. One girl from our group got through 7 sick bags. Ugg! Got back to the same camp site where we’d stayed a couple of days ago and sat on the beach to watch the sun set. There was a disco along the beach blaring out the latest African hits and a mother and three of her kids danced away trying to avoid the waves whilst the sun went down – a happy scene! Unfortunately the disco continued to blare out the music until 4am so nobody got much sleep in the tents!
