Dar to Iringa: 9th Aug 09
Today we started our drive across Africa from the east coast to the west coast, crossing Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia, before turning south into South Africa.
Our entire road trip is 6000 miles, of which we have so far covered about 1,000. We had a long drive day today, 12 hours in total and will have the same tomorrow – thank god for ipods and books!
Highlights today included crossing the rift valley with its amazing landscapes and driving through the Mikuni national park (Tanzania’s 3rd biggest) and looking for animals - we didn’t see many as it was the middle of the day but there were some baboons and giraffes within easy view. We also enjoyed looking at the ‘upside down’ trees – they’re really odd, very thick trunks and no leaves, so it looks like they have roots at the top – they look both sinister and comical at the same time.
Stayed overnight at a farm but Matt and I couldn’t cope with the tents so upgraded to a cute little stable block – breakfast at 5.15 tomorrow – yawn!

is that just a dead tree that the locals have tried to make a bit more interesting by calling it an upside down tree? it looks like a dead tree.
ReplyDeletelooking forward to the next installment already...
