We flew to Hoi An today. Our original plan had been to travel up the Vietnam coast overland, but we’d not anticipated the distances between the main cities – who wants to spend 15 hours on a bus? Not us, especially when a flight costs $25!
Hoi An is beautiful, a small city with a really well preserved old town. The old bit became a UNESCO world heritage site 10 years ago and is lovely, although most of it is given over to tourism which takes away some of the charm. It has some great bars and restaurants though, so we’re looking forward to spending a few lazy days exploring and hanging out.
This evening we sat on a terrace overlooking the main street drinking wine and met a nice girl called Fleur whom we hung out with for the evening. It’s the full moon tomorrow which means festival time! On the eve of every full moon the streets come alive with music and dance, and everyone crowds around the river to float lanterns. We grabbed a boat with Fleur and sailed up the river and let our lanterns sail off amongst all of the others, a beautiful sight!
