Hoi An, Vietnam: 1st - 2nd November 2009

Yesterday was spent today chilling out and exploring the old town. This morning we travelled 40km out of town to visit the My Son temples. They date back to the 8th century and were in pretty good nick until the Americans bombed them in the 60s. Now they’re mostly ruins. They are in a beautiful spot though, nestled between hills and streams.

Unfortunately we were unaware that a typhoon was heading towards the area. Although it’s due to hit the coast 200-300km south of here, it became really windy and the rain was torrential. We had to shelter by one of the temples for a while and then just take the plunge and get a thorough soaking, or we would have missed our bus back to town.

In the evening the rain abated for a while and we dashed into the old town to have a quick dinner. The river level is already starting to rise and covering the some of the pavement – let’s hope the town doesn’t flood. 6 weeks ago the whole place was under a meter and a half of water!
