Rio, Brazil: 2nd April 10
This morning we visited Sugar Loaf Mountain, which is one of the icons of Rio – it’s a huge rock, over 1,000 feet tall that juts out over the city.
You have to get 2 cable cars to the top and once there the views are spectacular.
There were tonnes of tourists as it’s Good Friday so everyone is off work, so we had to do a lot of queuing - good for people watching though!
In the afternoon we spent a couple of hours on Ipanema beach where Penny and I went for a swim - the waves are pretty big and nobody swims out very far as the currents can pull you out to sea. ‘Ipanema’ is actually the indigenous word for ‘dangerous water’!
Whilst on the beach Penny and Obe both bought sarongs – Obe’s is the Brazilian flag, and Penny’s replicates the design on the pavements around the area – a black and white squirly pattern – very pretty!
